Creating a Microbrew Memoir Takes Blood, Sweat and Beers

Article and photography by Kimberly Berkey

Who brew the Chosen Beer? HE’BREW. The Great American Beer Festival boasts brews of character. Only one, however, dares to tell the tale of how it took 13 years to reach beer brewing maturity and international success. Be it pass out or Passover, one can say that Jeremy Cowan’s choice to bottle his dream is certainly half full.

Cowan, creator of Shmaltz Brewing Company, made a special appearance at Falling Rock Tap House Wednesday, to promote his new book, Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah, a memoir which details the rise of his not so micro brews. Before getting to the good stuff, sometimes one has to put up with a little beer head before getting ahead. During his book reading and tasting, he shared that in the early days, everything was self brewed and hand bottled by yours truly. In some cases, it was even personally delivered by Cowan.

While it takes many stories to make several million beers, it is important to remember the ones that count, and perhaps refill or recycle when the time is right. The initial transition from writing beer labels to a beer book of manhood served as a bit shock for this Stanford English major. Cowan did not imagine the verbal crafting of his craft would be nearly as hard as he originally thought; he joked that it took him 20 years to use his degree to account for 13 years of HE’BREW history. However, despite a wavering start, his brew of thoughts and combination of the correct literary ingredients–with blood, sweat and beers–seems to have turned out just fine in its bottled and capped form, that’s now all the buzz.

The English Beat performs with Squeeze at the Ogden tonight!!!

THE ENGLISH BEAT
Adds Even More Shows, Including a Handful with SQUEEZE!

THE ENGLISH BEAT, headed up by the ever-affable Dave Wakeling, continue to bring their feel-good ska vibes across the U.S. and this time, they’ve added a slew of dates with UK pop rock legends SQUEEZE, who’s sweet pop hits like “Black Coffee in Bed”, “Pulling Mussels (From a Shell)” and “Up the Junction” will complement The English Beat’s seminal hits “Save It For Later”, “I Confess” and “Can’t Get Used to Losing You”. Bound to be an exciting show, the dates pick up in late July to the beginning of August (dates below).

Hailing from Birmingham England, The English Beat is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the release of their 1980 debut album I Just Can’t Stop It, which spawned the hits”Tears of a Clown”, “Mirror In the Bathroom”, “Best Friend”, “Twist & Crawl”, and “Too Nice to Talk To”. As a major part of the 2 Tone ska music revolution of the late 70s and early 80s, alongside their stablemates The Specials, Madness, and The Selector, the musical juggernaut that is Dave Wakeling hasn’t lost any momentum in songwriting. His brand of “Punky Reggae Party”, the English Beat’s hybrid was a delightful blend of Toots and the Maytals, the Velvet Underground, Buzzcocks, The Four Tops and Van Morrison. They have toured internationally with The Clash, Talking Heads, The Police, and REM among many others and has had prime soundtrack placement in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Grosse Pointe Blank. New songs such as “The Love You Give Lasts Forever”, “How Can You Stand There” and “Said We Would Never Die” are quickly becoming fan favorites and will soon be released in 2010. “I have plans to record this year,” Dave explains. “Some great new demos done, and now I’m just figuring out how to put the recording and touring schedule together. Expect releases to begin by Summer!”

BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS RELEASE
BRAND NEW STUDIO ALBUM,

ROCKSTEADY, JULY 20 ON BIG RECORDS

LOOK FOR THE BAND ON TOUR THIS SUMMER

Big Head Todd and The Monsters release their brand new studio album, Rocksteady, on July 20 on Big Records. In support of Rocksteady, Big Head Todd and The Monsters hit the road for a sprawling summer tour, including a recent big play at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Midnight Radio by performing the album in its entirety.

For Rocksteady, Big Head Todd and The Monsters’ eighth studio album, the band draws on a surprising body of influences. The album cuts across a broad swath of stylistic terrain including R&B, reggae and even punk rock. Throughout, the collection’s 11 tracks are funky, lilting, and melodic – all the qualities that have become signature to the band’s sound during their 25 years of making music.

“It’s a soul/Caribbean record that rocks,” frontman Todd Park Mohr says. “We almost went out of our way to take all the rock out of it, but it really rocks. It’s the very first album we’ve ever done that’s cohesive. It makes a difference, in terms of this album standing out from our other albums.”
